At Watermoor House Residential Care Home in Cirencester, we believe in nurturing the mind and spirit as much as the body. This May, our residents have enjoyed a variety of stimulating activities designed to inspire creativity, foster companionship and celebrate cherished memories – both recent and historic.
Marking 80 Years Since VE Day
A particularly moving highlight this month was our celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE Day. The occasion brought residents, families, and friends together for a heartfelt afternoon of remembrance and joy. Despite the overcast skies, the rain held off, and the garden at Watermoor House became the perfect setting for a traditional tea party and sing-along on the lawn.
We were delighted to welcome the wonderful David Ible, whose musical performance had toes tapping and voices raised in harmony. Our friends from Mindsong added their beautiful voices, creating a truly unforgettable atmosphere of community spirit and shared history.
In our craft group, residents coloured commemorative postcards and shared personal wartime memories. One particularly touching moment came when Alison brought in a ceramic poppy belonging to her mother – one of the historic Tower of London poppies created in 2014 to honour the fallen of the First World War.
Creative Afternoons and Artistic Expression
As the weather has turned a little cooler, our residents have moved indoors for a different kind of inspiration. Our recent crafting and mosaic workshops have sparked imaginations and brightened spirits. This week, we were thrilled to be joined by Nicky and Molly from Mumma’s Mosaics, who helped residents create beautiful and colourful designs, full of personality and flair. There was laughter, concentration, and more than a little artistic pride on show!
Card-making has also been a popular activity, with residents working together on beautiful handmade greetings cards. These will be available to purchase at our upcoming summer fete on Saturday 26th July – a wonderful opportunity to showcase the talents of our community and support our charitable work.
Games, Giggles and a Touch of Competition
Of course, it wouldn’t be Watermoor without a bit of friendly rivalry! Board games and bingo afternoons continue to be a firm favourite among residents. Just this afternoon, we played a fantastic dice-and-counter game invented by our very own Eli – a wonderfully competitive session filled with strategic thinking, cheeky tactics, and plenty of laughs.
These regular social activities aren’t just fun; they help keep minds sharp and spirits high. Whether it’s bingo, Scrabble or a handmade game created by one of our talented residents, every session brings something new.
A Home Full of Life
At Watermoor House, every month brings fresh opportunities to engage, connect and celebrate life together. Our dedicated activities team ensures that every resident has the chance to participate in meaningful, person-centred experiences – whether that’s crafting in a quiet corner, enjoying garden games on a sunny afternoon, or singing along to wartime favourites with friends and family.
