Living with a dementia can bring uncertainty and change, both for individuals and for the people who care about them.
At Watermoor House, we provide thoughtful, compassionate dementia care in a calm and familiar environment, with a strong focus on dignity, comfort and emotional wellbeing.
Our approach is centred on the individual. We take the time to understand each resident’s life story, routines, preferences and personality, so that care feels personal, respectful and reassuring.
Our approach to dementia care
Dementia affects everyone differently, and care needs can change over time. Our experienced care team provides flexible, person-centred support that adapts as those needs evolve.
Our care staff complete Dementia Awareness training, and some team members hold additional Dementia Link or Dementia Lead qualifications. This supports a shared understanding across the team and helps ensure that residents receive consistent, informed and compassionate care.
Our approach focuses on:
- dignity, respect and kindness
- maintaining familiar routines
- calm, clear communication
- emotional reassurance and wellbeing
- supporting independence wherever possible
Continuity of staff and a consistent daily structure help residents feel safe and supported.
An integrated and inclusive community
Watermoor House does not have a separate dementia unit or dedicated “dementia wing”. Instead, residents living with dementia are supported as part of our wider residential community.
We believe this integrated approach offers many benefits. Living alongside others in a calm, friendly environment can help residents maintain social connections, feel included and continue to enjoy everyday life as part of a small, supportive community.
At the same time, our team is attentive to individual needs and ensures that support is tailored appropriately, so that all residents — whether living with a dementia or not — feel comfortable, respected and secure.
We recognise that different people have different preferences, and we are always happy to talk openly with families about whether our approach is the right fit for their loved one.
A familiar and supportive environment
Watermoor House offers a homely, welcoming setting that many people living with dementia find reassuring. Familiar surroundings, clear layout and gentle daily rhythms help reduce anxiety and support orientation.
Residents benefit from:
- comfortable bedrooms that can be personalised
- shared lounge and dining areas
- access to gardens and outdoor spaces
- a small, friendly community
Families are encouraged to bring photographs and familiar items to help residents feel at home.
Activities and meaningful engagement
Meaningful activity can play an important role in wellbeing for people living with dementia. We offer a varied programme of activities designed to engage, stimulate and provide enjoyment, while remaining flexible to individual abilities and interests.
Activities may include:
- music and singing (including weekly sessions with Mindsong)
- reminiscence and conversation
- arts and crafts
- gentle movement and exercise
- one-to-one time with staff
Participation is always encouraged but never pressured.
Support for families
We understand that dementia affects families as well as individuals. Our team works closely with relatives, providing communication, reassurance and support throughout the care journey.
Families are always welcome at Watermoor House, and we value the important role they play in residents’ lives.
