At Watermoor House in Cirencester, we constantly seek opportunities that not only entertain but also enrich the lives of our residents. Recently, we had the pleasure of organising a truly grand day out—a delightful boat trip along the picturesque Gloucester-Sharpness Canal, courtesy of the Willow Trust. This outing was not just a leisurely day on the water; it was a vibrant event filled with joy, relaxation, and scenic beauty, perfectly aligning with our commitment to providing comprehensive, engaging care.
The Willow Trust and Their Mission
The Willow Trust operates with a noble aim: to offer individuals of all ages with disabilities or serious illnesses a chance to experience the therapeutic benefits of a day out on the water. Annually, the Trust facilitates such experiences for up to 7,000 children and adults, utilising their two specially designed, fully wheelchair-accessible boats—the Spirit of Freedom II and the Leonard Matchan. These boats are not only a means of transport but a gateway to freedom and joy for many who never imagined such an adventure was possible.
Journey Preparations and Departure
Thanks to the diligent efforts of our drivers, Martin and Paul, and the invaluable assistance of our dedicated volunteers, our residents were able to board the boats effortlessly. The Willow Trust boats are equipped with wide, heavy-duty ramps and an array of facilities designed to ensure comfort and accessibility for all passengers. These include wheelchair access to all areas, a lift to the wheelhouse, and low-set windows that offer expansive views of the serene canal and its vibrant wildlife.
The Experience on the Water
As the boats glided along the tranquil waters of the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal, our residents were treated to a sensory feast. The large picture windows of the boats provided unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside, dotted with moored ships and bustling with the activities of various water birds. This connection with nature is not only calming but also immensely invigorating for the spirit.
Residents had the opportunity to take turns at the helm, thanks to an adjustable steering unit that accommodates even the largest wheelchairs, making them feel in command of their adventure. This empowering experience is a testament to the Willow Trust’s commitment to making their guests feel valued and capable.
Comfort and Care Onboard
Comfort on the cooler days was ensured by central heating, while an on-board toilet equipped with an electric hoist and changing bed provided necessary conveniences. The crew, including a professionally trained skipper and several volunteers, was always on hand, ensuring that all needs were met promptly and with a smile. Complimentary tea, coffee, squash, and biscuits were served, adding a homey touch to the journey and ensuring that everyone was refreshed and satisfied.
Social and Therapeutic Benefits
One of the key aspects of outings like the Willow Boat Trip is the opportunity for social interaction and the building of confidence. Our residents enjoyed the company of each other, our volunteers, and the crew, sharing stories and laughter. This kind of interaction is invaluable, as it helps combat loneliness and promotes mental well-being.
Moreover, being part of such a special day out helps build self-esteem and a sense of community among our residents. They returned from the trip with renewed spirits and often, new friendships that enrich their daily lives at Watermoor House.
Reflecting on a Day Well Spent
As the day drew to a close and the boats docked back at the marina, the smiles on the faces of our residents were a clear indicator of the trip’s success. Activities like these are crucial not just for entertainment but for the holistic well-being of our residents. They prove that, regardless of age or ability, the joy and benefits of an engaging day out are truly accessible to everyone.
Continuing the Adventure
Back at Watermoor House, the stories of the boat trip continue to ripple through our conversations. This outing, like many others we organize, highlights the importance of variety and accessibility in the activities we offer. It reinforces our belief that engaging with life and embracing new experiences are key to the well-being and happiness of our residents.
We are dedicated to continuing our program of diverse and accessible activities, ensuring that each day is as fulfilling as possible.
