At Watermoor House Residential Care Home in Cirencester, we believe that providing our residents with enjoyable and therapeutic experiences is essential to their well-being. Recently, our residents had the opportunity to embark on a delightful day trip with the Willow Trust, where they enjoyed the tranquil waters of the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal.
A Day of Scenic Exploration
Our residents were thrilled to spend a day aboard a fully wheelchair-accessible broad-beamed boat, generously provided by the Willow Trust. The adventure began at Saul Junction in Frampton on Severn, a place steeped in history. Saul Junction is the meeting point of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and the Stroudwater Canal, and in days gone by, it served as a bustling hub for ships and crews from around the world. It’s also a part of the route tall ships take from the River Severn to Gloucester Docks, making it a picturesque and historically significant location.
Cruising Along the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal
With spirits high and anticipation in the air, our residents were ready to embark on a scenic cruise along the stunning Gloucester-Sharpness Canal. The canal’s calm waters and picturesque surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for a day of relaxation and enjoyment. Along the way, the boat made a stop at the beautiful picnic spot in Purton, allowing those who wished to picnic on dry land to do so, making it a delightful lunchtime break.
The Therapeutic Benefits of Water
It’s no secret that spending time near water can have therapeutic effects on both the mind and body. The calming presence of the canal waters, combined with the peaceful ambiance of the boat, offered our residents a unique opportunity to unwind, connect with nature, and escape the routine of daily life. The soothing sound of water, the gentle rocking of the boat, and the beauty of the surrounding countryside created an environment where our residents could truly relax and enjoy themselves.
